Spaying and neutering pets is a procedure performed every day in most veterinary clinics, but that does not make it “routine.”  At the Dougherty Veterinary Clinics we feel that there is a standard of care that must be maintained every time a surgical procedure is performed.  These are some questions you may have regarding the spaying or neutering of your pet.

Has your pet been examined and is he current on his vaccinations?  Your pet may be at risk for gastrointestinal or respiratory diseases that could complicate his recovery from surgery if he is not appropriately vaccinated. Exposure to other animals of unknown vaccination status or who are ill may put your pet at risk.  At the Dougherty Clinics, we require that all pets be examined and appropriately vaccinated prior to surgery.
Will pre-operative screening be performed? Depending on your pet’s age and risk factors, the following should be determined:  kidney and liver function, blood sugar level, feline leukemia/immunodeficiency virus status, heartworm and tick borne-disease status. 
How is your pet monitored and maintained during surgery? At the Dougherty Clinics, we have trained, experienced surgical technicians and a system of electronic monitors to evaluate your pet’s blood pressure, oxygen level and heart rate during the surgery.  A warming blanket maintains normal body temperature.  An intravenous catheter is placed before surgery and supportive fluids provided throughout the surgery and recovery period.
Will your pet be provided with post-operative pain control?  Before and immediately after surgery at the Dougherty Clinics, your pet will be given an opiod pain medication.  She will also go home with oral pain medications that are tailored to the patient and the procedure.  This standard of care will not be compromised at our clinic and may be adjusted, as the individual patient requires.
Does your pet require procedures in addition to spaying or neutering? Young dogs and cats requiring declawing, dewclaw removal, umbilical hernia repair, etc., do not need to undergo an additional anesthetic episode if these issues can be dealt with at the time of spaying or neutering.
Does the surgery staff provide follow-up care?  It is very important to us to address your concerns in a timely and convenient manner.  In general, we are available during the day and after hours for post-op consult.
