Gerbil and Hamster Care |
|
|
|
Gerbils |
|
Gerbils
are generally friendly and easily cared for. Their average life span
is 3-5 years. They require a safe enclosure with access to
materials for chewing and an exercise wheel and/or ball. They like to
dig, burrow and chew so bedding such as aspen wood shavings along with
cardboard toilet paper rolls, etc, should be provided. Two gerbils
can be housed together, but unless they are introduced at a young age,
may fight viciously. |
| |
|
Male
gerbils can be neutered to prevent overpopulation. Commercial
gerbil food and fresh vegetables, plus alfalfa hay should be
provided, as well as fresh water. Vaccinations are not
necessary. Your veterinarian should be consulted if you observe
signs of illness such as poor hair coat, ocular discharge,
decreased appetite or activity level, diarrhea or weight loss. |

|
|
| Hamsters |
 |
Hamsters require frequent, gentle handling to tame. They may bite,
however if they are disturbed or ill. Their average life span is
1.5-2 years. Hamsters are nocturnal and like to burrow as well as
climb. An exercise wheel and escape-proof ball should be provided
for exercise. |
|
Nesting material including toilet tissue will provide safe a safe and
warm burrow. Commercial pelleted diets, as well as treats such as
apple, raisins or walnuts should be fed. |
