Rabbit Care |
|
|
|
Rabbits are quiet pets. They develop personalities and become
bonded to their owner with time and attention. They need daily,
supervised exercise and playtime, as well as grooming of the fur and
toenails. Rabbits are not the best pets for very young children
who may not understand gentle handling. |
|
|
|
Rabbits may be housed indoors or outdoors and can be trained to
use a litter box. A large enclosure with the floor covered to
prevent injury to the feet is required. Diet should include good
quality pellets and timothy hay. At most, a few tablespoons of
dark green, leafy vegetables may be fed as supplements. Other
snacks (iceberg lettuce, celery, apple) are not appropriate and
can cause serious gastrointestinal problems. |
 |
| |
|
The rabbit’s lifespan averages 5-10 years.
Pet rabbits do not require yearly
vaccinations, but an annual exam is recommended. Spaying and
neutering rabbits is important to prevent serious illness and
undesirable behaviors. |
